Responding to Organizational Impacts
The Backlash
Political polarization in the United States intensified dramatically, characterized by deepening ideological divisions between Republicans and Democrats that permeated near ever aspect of social and political life. The Trump presidency (2017-2021) and its aftermath significantly accelerated these trends, with sharp disagreements emerging around issues like pandemic response, election integrity, racial justice, and cultural debates.
The 2020 presidential election and its contentious aftermath became a critical inflection point, with a significant portion of Republican voters questioning the election’s legitimacy and the January 6th Capitol riot symbolizing the extreme tensions between political factions.
Social media and partisan news ecosystems have further entrenched these divisions, creating echo chambers that reinforce existing beliefs and make meaningful dialogue increasingly difficult.
Key manifestations of this polarization included declining trust in institutions, heated debates around COVID-19 policies, vaccine mandates, and public health measures, intense cultural conflicts over issues like critical race theory, LGBTQ+ rights, and educational curricula and a growing perception that those who don’t agree with us politically are a fundamental threat to national values.
This polarization could not help but extend to the workplace. It manifested itself in many ways as people have retreated into silos of different information sources. We have experienced a loss of a sense of a shared experience and a decrease in the ability to empathize with those who may be different from us.
Navigating Change
Our interventions are targeted both at the leadership and staff levels through coaching and performance management to help create a shared sense of ownership in organizational and individual growth and development. Giving employees the feeling that they are valued and helping them understand their role in the bigger picture heightens a sense of belonging that reduces the impact of polarization and creates connections that transcend politics.
